On our long thruhikes we always start out doing much lower daily mileage than we plan to build up to. Even after building up, we reduce our mileage if anything starts to hurt. On the Tahoe Rim Trail, I started the trip doing more daily miles than my body was trained for, and I didn’t slow down when my shin started to hurt. Now I’m paying the price for being foolish — the pain in my lower shin is making it hard to walk, so I am going to have to spend a few days off trail to rest and let it recove
