Rediffusion was maintaining a policy of expansion and service that had characterised its growth. Employing over 15,000 people internationally, the group was firmly established as a world leader in many areas of its operation.
Rediffusion manufactured its first television set in 1947 specifically for use on their networks. In 1954 the British Government gave the go-ahead for Commercial Television to commence and Rediffusion formed a new company in collaboration with which went on the air in 1955 from the ITV transmitters at Croydon in south London.
Rediffusion demonstrated a TV signal sent over 1 mile by means of a fibre optic cable running in parallel with the main vision trunk route at Hastings. The demonstration was a success and comparison could be made between a signal sent over copper or fibre optics.
Each day during the 1970's and 1980's thousands of Rediffusion subscribers in Singapore enjoyed a large variety of programming catering to diverse tastes. For many, Rediffusion music and entertainment made up very much a part of their day.
The bright yellow Rediffusion signboard has been there for 46 years since the establishment of Rediffusion's first office in Malaya 20 years after the idea originated in England. With its initial base in Kuala Lumpur a broadcasting substation was set up in Penang in l952 followed by one in Province Welleshby and lpoh 11 years later.
Rediffusion Singapore was established in the late 1940's bringing a Cable Radio Service thousands of subscribers in Singapore at a time when radio sets were very expensive and reception of such stations very poor.
