Respirators protect users in two basic ways. The first is by removing contaminants from the air. Respirators of this type include particulate respirators, which filter out airborne particles; and “gas masks” which filter out chemicals and gases. Other respirators protect by supplying clean respirable air from another source.

NIOSH-approved Particulate Filtering Respirators Classification. There are ten classes of NIOSH-approved particulate filtering respirators. These types of respirators use filters to remove particles from the air that is breathed through them. The N, R, and P designations refer to the filter’s oil resistance as described in the table below.

These respirators must be selected for protection against a specific hazard. The cautions, limitations and restriction of use provided with the respirator must be strictly followed.
