African Chair - Bauhaus Kooperation
The “African Chair” is a work dating from the early expressionistic phase of the Bauhaus and a collaborative effort of the two Bauhauslers Marcel Breuer and Gunta Stölzl. Their collaborative project of 1921 was first given the name “African Chair” by Breuer many years later.

Marcel Breuer’s first chair, known as the African Chair and dating from 1921, illustrates the concept of a stable framework with an elastic covering. The back of the chair is formed by textile material by Gunta Stölzl, who also designed the seat cushion.

The only previously known documentation of this throne-like piece of furniture was a contemporary black-and-white photograph.
