2015年1月23日 · Vermilion, Lead Tin Yellow, Asphaltum, Lapis Lazuli, and a dozen other forms of traditional pigments of the old masters have, as their modern counterparts, pigments that are far superior in hue, chroma, and lightfastness, than those used by the old masters, in my opinion.

2005年3月29日 · actually, modern ultramarine is chemically identical to the pigment in lapis lazuli. the color appearance is very similar — just as dark and intense, though the modern pigment usually has a somewhat redder hue. it is very obvious wherever it was used in medieval works — painters always made sure it was recognizable as such.

I haven’t tried the “General Lapis Lazuli”–whatever that is–but I’ve tried Daniel Smith’s “Lapis Lazuli Genuine”, and found it to be a weak tinter, blotchy, and a rather unpleasant colour all around.

Option 1: If you want a limited palette, then have Ultramarine as your only blue pigment. Option 2: If you want a split-primary palette, then have Ultramarine as a warm blue, and Phthalo Blue as a cool blue.

2008年11月20日 · Nowadays we gots both Ultramarine and the imitation, French Ultramarine, both essential colors. Real lapis lazuli is used to make jewelry, so, obviously, it wasn’t/ain’t cheap. I’ve been told that Lapis Lazuli was dissimilar in hue from Ultramarine Blue though. Go Figure. By the by, some manufacterers do make what they call Lapis Lazuli.

2006年5月7日 · Yes!! The Yarkas are—-well, don’t seem just hard but waxy and generally unpleasant. Jack Richeson told me that Yarka (a company he bought in Russia) actually used Lapis Lazuli for the Ultramarine since they had so much of it that was not gem quality—-sized to small, I think. But many of the colors fade terribly.
