However, if you are planning to travel further afield, such as the Great Ocean Road or the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, you will need to either pre-book these as an organised tour or be prepared to hire a car. Sovereign Hill, a reconstructed 'town' from the gold mining era is also a good day trip from Melbourne - this can be done - with a bit of planning on a regional train to Ballarat and then a taxi, by car about 90 minutes drive from Melbourne or even as a pre-booked organised tour. One trap - Sydney to Melbourne looks 'close' on the map, however it is a one hour flight or 11 hours by road. Hope this helps
